“Oh Darlin’, Please Forgive Me”

This morning, the original version of this song, “Oh! Darlin” was in my head once I got up. I felt like the first two lines were in my head in relation to a dream I had. It was a really weird thing; that moment when your subconscious chooses a song to DJ in your mind that is related to your thoughts.

So many times a song will be stuck in my head that goes along with what I was thinking about, when I didn’t purposely think of that song. Even if I didn’t hear that song for five years, it’ll be there. It’s a lot of interesting brain associations. The reason, I guess, we forever associate “that person” with that one song at the junior high dance.

There’s a book called Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks that talks about this. I’m obsessed with this book even though I haven’t finished it since the summer. It’s all about how music works with the mind. It mentions people with “music brain disorders,” people who constantly hear music in their minds like it’s actually playing on the radio.

Maybe one of these days I’ll post a list of all the songs I’ve had this lyric-association experience with.

Does this happen to anyone else? Weird experiences with music and the mind? Does anyone know what I’m talking about or do I just sound completely crazy?

P.S. Don’t forget to enjoy this video’s song. Maybe you’ll wake up with Sara Bareilles’ cover in your head next!
